Facial recognition system on iPhones is more secure that the ones at airports

Facial recognition is deemed to be one of the secure ways to carry out identity verification. These days, many security checkpoints, airports, and even smartphones have started leaning toward the technology for identification. However, is the technology that reliable? Researchers at Krenon, an AI company, have announced that they were able to trick some of the facial recognition systems with a 3D mask they made.

The making of the mask does not require any complicated technology. It’s just that the material used is not that kind of low-cost plastic masks of Spiderman that you can find in stores. The researchers have fooled checkpoints, banks, and even airports by wearing the printed mask of someone else’s face.

The usage of facial recognition is to cut down the effort and time while you’re going through identity verifications. However, after this experiment has been carried out, it seems that this technology is not that safe and secure after all. In addition to that, the researchers were also able to bypass Wechat Pay and AliPay terminals that required the facial scanning process to pay at stores.

What surprised us the most is the facial recognition systems on Huawei and Apple were not fooled when the researchers tried to unlock the smartphones with the mask. The reason probably is because the light imaging technology is sophisticated enough to not be fooled easily. However, take note that there were people who tried to unlock Apple’s Face ID using masks made by professional mask makers earlier, and it worked.

If you think the facial recognition systems used at airports are still 'safer' than the ones on your smartphones, think again! Let us know your opinion about this experiment on our Facebook page. For more viral tech news, stay tuned to TechNave.com.
