Fahmi Fadzil: Govt has no plans to create new law to regulate social media platforms

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has assured that the government has no plans to create new laws or specific Acts for the purpose of regulating social media platforms. Furthermore, he stressed that the government has never even announced any intention to draft such legislation. 

As reported by Bernama, the Communications Minister said that he has personally never heard of a social media platform regulation act being discussed by the government. At this time, the Communications Ministry and the government have no plans to create a new law to regulate social media platforms. 

Previously, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was reported to be in the process of preparing a framework to enable all social media platform providers to register with the commission to facilitate the regulation of such platforms in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Fahmi revealed that MCMC has been asked to expand its methods to identify parties involved in online gambling promotions and to deactivate the accounts involved.
