Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that the Government is considering making it mandatory for AI-generated content to be labelled as such. The requirement is touted to be part of the upcoming Online Safety Act 2024, which is expected to come into force by the end of 2025.
‘AI-generated’ label may be mandatory for AI-generated content under the Online Safety Act 2024

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, Fahmi was quoted by Bernama as saying that the move is crucial to address the misuse of AI, especially on social media platforms for the purposes of scams, defamation and identity impersonation. Furthermore, the Communications Ministry also believes that platforms must be proactive in labelling AI-generated content, with some already beginning to voluntarily do so.
Fahmi added that such initiatives could be expanded regionally through cooperation among ASEAN countries. At the national level, the Communications Minister asserted that Parliament and Ministries such as the Ministry of Digital must lead on the matter, though every Ministry has a role in assessing and evaluating AI use within its scope.
