Fahmi Fadzil: Govt plans to introduce heavier punishments for telco cable thefts

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that the government is considering introducing heavier fines for those involved in telco cable theft which caused service disruptions. he added that heavier punishment would be proposed in the amendment to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 

According to Bernama, Fahmi said that he would ask the team at his Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to examine and provide recommendations for the amendment. He added that the amendment was proposed not only due to incidents of cable theft and vandalism but also because of the disruption to the quality of telco services that has always been raised by users. 

Hence, the draft amendment will be scrutinised before being taken to Parliament for debate. Currently, the amendment is being studied by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
