Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that Meta’s social media platforms lead other platforms in complying with Malaysian laws. On the flip side, X (formerly Twitter) is the worst offender.

According to Malay Mail, Fahmi yesterday shared the compliance rate of each social media platform towards Malaysian laws, with the top 3 being made up of all Meta’s platforms. Instagram has the highest compliance rate at 88 per cent, followed by Facebook with 85 per cent and WhatsApp with 79 per cent.

Meanwhile, 4th place is TikTok with a 76 per cent compliance rate, while Telegram is 5th with 65 per cent. X is the worst out of all social media platforms with only a 25 per cent compliance rate.

Despite Meta platforms topping the list, the Communications Minister did single out Facebook for being a platform where online scams run rife. Besides that, Fahmi also revealed that the laws that these platforms are disobeying vary from the Personal Data Protection Act (Act 709) to Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Illegal Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001 to Communications and Multimedia Act (Act 588).

Accordingly, the Communications Minister announced that MCMC had issued a letter of instruction to social media platforms to get feedback regarding the issues. Fahmi will meet a number of these platforms too during his visit to Singapore next week.
