Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today revealed that a total of 18,785 pieces of content have been requested by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to be taken down so since 1 January 2025. These contents were on various social media platforms and violated the country's laws.
According to Bernama, of that total, 84 per cent were related to online gambling and scams, five per cent involved cyberbullying, and four per cent were advertisements for prohibited items. He added that gambling and scams are the largest category of content on social media platforms that the MCMC has requested to remove.
Fahmi said that while his side has cooperated well, these platforms are still allowing these criminal activities to take place. Hence, once licensed, the Communications Ministry will ask these social media service providers to impose certain restrictions on specific content on their platforms.
