
There has been controversy recently involving the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) requesting mobile phone call data from telco companies in Malaysia, with many claiming the move as invading the privacy of users. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has since addressed the concerns, assuring that the data collected is only for statistics and doesn’t include identities or any information that could be used to identify individuals.

BERNAMA quoted Fahmi as saying that the purpose of the data collection is for the official statistics of the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). He added that the data will be used to support evidence-based policymaking, including enhancing network infrastructure.
The Communications Minister further stressed that the data collected doesn’t contain any personal information but focuses on trends, which enables more details information about quality, engagement levels and the number of users in specific sub-districts or districts.

Besides that, Fahmi elaborated that the decision to collect the data was reached through mutual agreement between telcom companies and MCMC and also involves agencies such as DOSM in a series of workshops held since 2023.
The Communications Minister said that previously, the info about the telecommunications sector was too general. Hence, a more detailed approach will enable the Government to assess the actual needs of the public and bridge the digital divide more effectively.
