Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today announced that the 5G network in Malaysia has exceeded the target of 80% coverage by the end of 2023. Accordingly, a second 5G network will be announced soon as Malaysia moves to a dual 5G network.

In a press conference today, Fahmi announced that as of 31 December 2023, the 5G network coverage in Malaysia’s populated area was at 80.2%. He reiterated this via his official X account after the media briefing.

As reported by Bernama, the Communications Minister said that the Special Task Force on 5G will meet this Friday (12 Jan) to decide on the road map and direction moving forward. The decision made by the task force will then be forwarded to Cabinet.

Fahmi added that the government will not take long to consider and make an announcement of a shift from single to dual 5G network coverage. Afterwards, the dual 5G can be implemented if the terms agreed by the Task Force are achieved.
