Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that among all social media platforms in Malaysia, Telegram has the lowest rate of compliance with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) requests to remove harmful content. Accordingly, the Minister has ordered MCMC to call Telegram for a meeting next week.
Telegram only complied with less than 50% of MCMC’s requests to remove harmful content
Fahmi was quoted by FMT as saying that Telegram has a compliance rate of less than 50% with MCMC’s requests to remove content on the platform. Moreover, on 19 June, MCMC filed a civil suit against Telegram and 2 of its channels, “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas”, for allegedly spreading harmful content in Malaysia.
The Communications Minister elaborated that the suit marks the first action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider in Malaysia. He added that the move follows Telegram’s serious failure to address content that has been repeatedly reported to it, despite multiple negotiation and cooperation efforts by MCMC.
As of 24 June, MCMC flagged 1,188,528 pieces of harmful content across various social media platforms. Out of the total, only 173,642 requests were complied with.
