Fake news has been a thing even before the pandemic and we have been combating it ever since. In an effort to curb misinformation from spreading further, our local Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that there will be a new AI-powered chatbot on WhatsApp to do fact-checking

During the launch of the ‘Jelajah Hawana Bersama Sisaw 2024’ programme that was held in Sarawak, he told reporters that the development of a WhatsApp app or chatbot will be launched soon to verify the authenticity of shared information. The AI chatbot works with text but Fadzil also requested it to handle videos and images.

When asked how it exactly works, Fadzil said the AI chatbot can confirm "if a video is old; if any action has been taken; or what exactly the content is,”. While the video and image verification is still under development, text verification is almost ready to launch.

“I have tested the system and it is quite efficient. We are also ensuring it can interact in several languages including Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil,” said Fadzil. He also added that the AI chatbot is in the final stages of preparation before the official launch.
