Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that he will hold meetings with TikTok after Chinese New Year to discuss the issue of children’s safety online. Furthermore, his Ministry alongside the de-facto Law Ministry and Digital Ministry is also planning to implement a technical committee involving the matter as well as other online security issues.

According to Bernama, Fahmi said that the safety of children is the government’s priority, with one of the focus being to ensure compliance with existing laws on social media. Accordingly, beyond the meeting with TikTok, the Communications Ministry will also meet with other social media operators.

Fahmi asserted that his Ministry will coordinate with several ministries to discuss what legislations need to be amended or created and actions to be taken now in regard to the matter. On the same note, he also advised Malaysian influencers to self-regulate and be careful when handling podcasts or uploading content on social media so as not to have a negative impact on the community.

Should the industry fail to self-regulate and the situation become more serious, Fahmi said that the government will look at what actions they must take. He also urged parents to monitor their children’s social media content consumption so that they will not be influenced easily.
