As platforms for discourse, social media sites not only contain news but also content that is not child-friendly. While these platforms all have age restrictions, they are easily circumvented by tech-savvy children. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil wants that to change.
According to Bernama, Fahmi urged social media platform providers to "take action based on the set age limit guidelines". For those unaware, most social media platforms require their users to be at least 13 years old. As mentioned, the age restriction is typically easy to circumvent and poorly enforced.
Besides that, the minister confirmed that there won't be any laws to limit the age of social media users. This is about the bill in Australia that bans those under 16 years old from using social media platforms. However, Malaysia will have a new regulation starting 1 January 2025 to dictate which social media platforms can operate in Malaysia. To obtain a license, social media platforms are required to have proper age restrictions and enforce them.
Will enforcing age restrictions be enough? What's a better way to prevent children from becoming victims of scammers or other criminals? Share your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
