In early July this year, MCMC said Malaysians could expect a price reduction in broadband service after September 2023. Well, we are getting closer to the end of September and our Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil have just given the media an update today.

According to Fahmi, he has requested for discussions to be completed next week. After that, a signing ceremony with all the telco companies providing their broadband services at a wholesale level will take place. Fahmi also believes that broadband internet prices will fall quite significantly.

While it's good news for the rakyat, it's another matter for the telcos as the feedback provided took some time during the meetings. One concern is that the slashed prices would affect their profits, but Fahmi assured them that the government had successfully tackled inflation in the telecommunications sector. He backed up his claim from the Department of Statistics Malaysia's data report, saying the current inflation rate is -3.7%.

In other news, the 5G network coverage across Malaysia is expected to expand to 80% by the end of 2023. As of the end of July 2023, the government has managed to reach 66.8% coverage for 5G. Although the 5G mobile experience has improved, adoption of the technology is at a slow pace, according to Opensignal's latest report
