Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has revealed that the government is willing to consider fiscal incentives to assist local telco companies in transitioning to 5G. These incentives are meant to mitigate any short-term commercial consequences of providing 5G services to their customers.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, Tengku Zafrul said that such assistance was considered due to how 5G can contribute to Malaysia’s digital ambitions. In fact, 5G will boost the economy by RM650 billion and create 750,000 high-value jobs between now and 2030.

Stressing that 5G deployment is a matter of public interest, the Finance Minister said that the government will not extend the deadline for local telcos to join the 5G agreement with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB). As of right now, the deadline would be on 30 June 2022 and Tengku Zaful wants that sense of urgency to be felt by all stakeholders.

However, should an extension be required, the process may be extended until early July 2022 at the latest. For now, the government has ordered DNB and all telco to meet the given deadline.
