The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to coordinate with telco companies to activate WiFi equipment at all flood temporary relief centres (PPS) nationwide. Moreover, in lieu of the nationwide flash flood, KKD is also handing out contributions worth RM1 million to flood victims in all states.

As reported by Bernama, in regard to internet access complaints and telephone lines at PPS, MCMC is prepared to provide and improve the utility for flood victims housed at PPS. Accordingly, most PPS have WiFi equipment already activated and MCMC will coordinate with telco companies to activate WiFi at all other PPS.

Fahmi also informed media personnel covering the flood situation that should they face problems in terms of internet access and phone lines, they can contact his office directly to quickly resolve the issue. As for damaged telecommunication towers in several flooded states, the KKD Minister has ordered MCMC to look into the matter and for the towers to be repaired immediately when floods have receded.

Besides that, KKD has also instructed the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) to also collaborate with telcos to deliver flood information through the short message system (SMS). In relation to that, KKD is also set to utilise all radio and television channels to publicise flood information and prepare for the disaster as an early warning to the people.

Speaking at a media conference after inspecting KKD Flood Assistance yesterday, Fahmi announced that fund collection to aid flood victims was via Tabung Bantuan Bencana KKD contributed by various agencies under the ministry. Moreover, the goods which would be presented are contributed by CelcomDigi and several telco companies.

These include daily necessities and food, with KKD also providing volunteers to help with flood relief nationwide. To ensure the contributions and items received are for all flood victims, Fahmi said the ministry would cooperate with the related agencies to obtain complete information on identifying the target groups.
