
Today, Sony Malaysia is proud to announce that four Malaysian photographers have been shortlisted by the World Photography Organisation to partake the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards further. The four participants are Laily Hassan, Chee Yen Chuan, Eng Chung Tong and Roslan Nasir which are in the Open and Youth competition.
There is a total of 326,997 entries from 195 countries and territories submitted across the four competitions of the 2019 Awards, this is the highest ever number of entries to date. The Open and Youth competition has ten diverse categories and features that participants can take, our local photographers were chosen in three different categories which you can view below:

“During summer, the temperatures here can reach up to 70 C so it is considered the hottest desert in the world. In other seasons this dessert remains as one of the most popular tourist spots, especially for those who want to experience desert life and to view the amazing rock formations”. said Laily Hassan from Pasir Mas for the Travel category

Then in the Culture category, ‘Have you been to a Chinese Opera?’ by Chee Yen Chuan from Puchong, Selangor wanted to portray the opera performers applying their “unique” make-up before the performance commences at Cheok Beh Kieng Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Also in the same category, Eng Chung Tong from Kuala Lumpur submitted his image ‘Synergy of Humanity’ to illustrate the daily working lives of a minority tribe in Yunnan that “teamwork, coordination and cooperation [within the tribe] is essential for efficiency otherwise it will be chaos”

Finally, Roslan Nasir from Kluang has been shortlisted in the Landscape category for his image named ‘Mount Bromo, East Java, Indonesia’. It was shot at 4 AM in the morning
According to Sony, the shortlisted candidates stand a chance to win in their respective categories to become the Open Photographer of the Year, with prizes including the latest cutting-edge Sony camera equipment, flights to the London Awards ceremony, and $5000 USD (that's ~RM20337!). In addition, their photographs will all be shown at the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London before going on a global tour and be published in the annual Awards’ book as well.
