It has been a year since Google announced its intention to invest ~RM9.4 billion in Malaysia to build its first-ever Google Data Centre and Google Cloud Region. This week, a news report by Forbes said Google authorised Gamuda with a major contract, worth RM1 billion, to build a data centre in Port Dickson.
The deal was signed by Gamuda DC Infrastructure and Google's Pearl Computing Malaysia. As part of the agreement, Gamuda DC will also build a water treatment plant capable of supplying 65 million litres of water per day to support the cooling needs of the facility. Additionally, Gamuda will sell 389 acres of land to Pearl Computing for RM455 million, which will serve as the site for the data centre.
This is Google's second major collaboration with Gamuda, following a RM1.7 billion contract in May 2024 to manage mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works for a data centre project at Elmina Business Park in Selangor. With the first Google data centre in the plans, this will play an essential role in enabling Google to deliver the benefits of AI to users and customers across the country.
To the uninitiated, Gamuda is one of Malaysia's leading infrastructure firms. It was founded in 1976 by tycoon Lin Yun Ling and Koon Yew Yin, and it has since expanded outside of Malaysia with a growing portfolio in Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and the UK.
