Gemini can now play YouTube Music

Last month, it was hinted that Gemini will support music playback soon. The update was actually confirmed at Google I/O 2024 but wasn't a built-in Google app function as we thought. Instead, it's a Gemini extension/add-on for Android devices or PCs.

As spotted by 9to5Google, you can now access the extension from gemini.google.com/extensions. Go to the panel for YouTube Music on the bottom right, press the toggle, and voila - it's enabled. You can also enable extensions like YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Workspace here. Currently, the YouTube Music extension only supports prompts in English. For Android devices, download the Gemini app from the Google Play Store.

So, what can you do with the YouTube Music Gemini extension? As expected, it allows you to send prompts to Gemini and have it play music from YouTube Music. For example, you can ask it to "play my Liked music" or find music from a particular artist. Since the Gemini Android app has a voice recorder, we may also get an update providing support for voice prompts in the future. However, some prompts won't work for now. For example, the Gemini app confirms that playback for playlists isn't supported yet.
