So yeah... for those who use the standard laughing emoji, it has now been deemed "uncool" by Gen Z. Reported by CNN, most Gen Z (majority from the US) now think the laughing emoji is not cool anymore for some reason. Here are some snippets of what the Gen Z youngsters think.

According to one of the comments, it seems Gen Z has stopped using the emoji because of older people using it. So how do they express their laughter then? Well, they replaced it with a skull emoji because it signifies "I'm dead" or "I'm dying" from something very funny. In other words, it's the equivalent of 笑死我 ("laugh die me" in Mandarin, ask your Chinese friends). The crying emoji is considered acceptable as it is closely related to LMAO (lel).

The ROFL emoji (the rolling laughing head) is also banned by them. But ironically, the laughing emoji is the most-used emoji on Twitter in 2020. Apple also remarked that it's the most popular in the US so perhaps due to its own popularity and success, it's not cool anymore. As to how Gretchen McCulloch, an internet linguist and author of "Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language", the "tears of joy was a victim of its own success".
