Planning a trip to Genting Highlands soon? Starting 28 May 2026, motorists heading up the hill resort in Malaysia will need to pay a new road charge, with cars and vans being charged RM5 per entry. That said, what should you know about it?

For your information, the new charge will be implemented by Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB), the concessionaire and operator for Jalan Genting Highlands. Payments will be collected at two main entry points, namely Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya roundabout.

Genting Highlands Road Charges Begin in Two Phases

Additionally, the rollout will happen in two phases, beginning on 28 May 2026, before the second phase starts on 28 June 2026. During the first phase, road users entering Jalan Genting Highlands will need to pay the new fee unless they fall under the exempted categories.

For regular visitors, the RM5 fee applies to Class 1 vehicles such as private cars and vans. Larger vehicles will be charged according to their respective categories.

Here are the announced road charge rates:

  • Class 1 (Cars and Vans): RM5
  • Class 2 (Medium Lorries): RM15
  • Class 3 (Heavy Lorries): RM25
  • Class 4 (Taxis): RM3.30
  • Class 5 (Buses): RM5

Motorcycles and emergency vehicles are exempt from the charges.

LPR System and Digital Payments Introduced

Moreover, LCSB confirmed that selected vehicle classes will need to use dedicated “Lorong Khas” lanes together with the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) system. The setup is part of a wider traffic management and digital payment system for the Genting Highlands route.

Interestingly, the operator previously carried out a trial run for the system starting from 2 April 2026. During the testing phase, motorists were asked to tap Touch ‘n Go cards, debit cards, or credit cards at gantries, although no charges were imposed at the time.

Resident Discounts and Season Pass Features

Besides that, permanent residents in Genting Highlands will also receive additional benefits once the second phase begins on 28 June 2026. Eligible residents can register up to two Class 1 vehicles to receive a 10% discount on the road charge.

In addition, LCSB will introduce a six-month season pass with unlimited access through the LPR system and dedicated lanes. Registered resident vehicles will temporarily enjoy free access before the second phase officially starts.

What do you think about the new RM5 road charge for Genting Highlands in Malaysia? Will it affect how often you travel there?
