
In a not so surprise move after Apple brought out their ARKit, Google have announced their ARCore SDK for Android developers to create AR (Augmented Reality) experiences on normal smartphones without any special Google Tango hardware. It will be available with Google Pixel and the Samsung Galaxy S8 running Android 7.0 Nougat and above first, but will spread out to other manufacturers like ASUS, Huawei and LG.
There is no word on whether this means that Google will be killing off Tango as they've said that ARCore is built off of Tango, but it does mean that smooth Android AR is no longer the exclusive use for Google Tango phones like the ASUS ZenFone AR or Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. We expect that such Google Tango phones might provide a bit more accuracy over this software driven ARCore kit but you can see some ARCore AR Experiments for yourself below.
