In just a few hours ago, Google I/O 2016 kicked off in California, USA and they didn't waste any time announcing several Android and Google features, on this topic, we will take a look at their first two announced features - Google Assistant and Google Home. But what are they?

Google Assistant

There's no doubt that Google's search engine is the best in the world, it's hard to imagine another search engine to overthrow that. Well, Google just introduced Google Assistant and is described as the next generation of search.

How Google Assistant works is making "conversational understanding" applicable and more natural with voice support. For example, you could say something like "What time is X-Men: Apocalypse movie tonight in TGV Sunway Pyramid?", or even asking "Who's directing the movie?". In a way, it's sort of like a two-way conversation between you and the computer without skipping a beat. You could say this is Google's answer to rival Apple's Siri which is also capable of doing such feats.

Google Assistant will be available on Android, iOS, in the home and globally later this year but no Malaysia release dates just yet.

Next up, Google Home is a kind of device that you control at home and it'll be a portal service for the Google Assistant experience. It has multiple room support, remote control of Chromecast and can be connected to certain devices such as your TV, and you can command it to do things such as "Turn on HBO on my TV." and the TV will switch to that channel on your screen, all without your hands and just your voice.

Google Home also allows third-party services, such as calling Uber or booking a restaurant using OpenTable. Basically, the device lets you do anything from search enquiries, manage everyday tasks, entertainment, check flight statuses, turning on lights, appointments, and more.

There was no word on the price, but it will be available later this year.
