Google has officially announced that Chrome version 139, launching on 19 August 2025, will no longer support macOS 11 Big Sur. Although the browser will still function on this version, it will no longer receive updates, new features, or security patches.
The update is free, but the catch lies in whether your Mac can run a newer version of macOS.
Why Chrome is dropping support for macOS 11
macOS Big Sur was first released in November 2020 and marked a major shift in Apple’s design and performance goals. However, Apple discontinued security support for Big Sur in November 2023. In line with its standard policy, Google is now ending Chrome updates for the unsupported OS.
Starting with Chrome version 139, users running Big Sur will receive a notice informing them that their operating system is no longer supported. Chrome version 138 will be the last version compatible with macOS 11. From then on, installation and updates will require macOS 12 Monterey or newer.
What this means for Mac users
Mac users on Big Sur, including older MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, will still be able to use Chrome 138. However, they will no longer receive performance improvements, bug fixes, or critical security patches. Over time, this could expose systems to increased risk and compatibility issues with modern web features.
To maintain access to the latest Chrome updates, users are encouraged to upgrade to at least macOS Monterey. If your device no longer supports newer macOS versions, alternative browsers like Firefox or Safari may offer temporary support. Users can also consider switching to ChromeOS Flex as an alternative operating system for older Macs.
What we think
From TechNave’s perspective, this move by Google follows a growing trend of phasing out support for legacy systems. Malaysian users still on macOS Big Sur should evaluate whether an OS upgrade is possible or if it is time to consider new hardware or alternative browser solutions.
Regular browser updates are crucial for security, especially for users who rely on Chrome for work, online banking, or productivity.
Still using macOS Big Sur? With Chrome support ending soon, now is the time to plan ahead. Will you update your macOS, switch browsers, or look into other options?
