Ransomware remains a devastating cyber threat, involving organizations from healthcare to education and governments to corporations. Today, Google Cloud announced a new, AI-powered defense for Google Drive particularly for Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows files.

Automatic Intervention, Rapid Recovery?

Traditional antivirus programs tend to focus on pre-entry blocking, which hasn't worked very well. Once an attack slips through, that's it. Google’s new solution detects the patterns of ransomware and then pauses syncing to the cloud, which effectively stops it from working.

Utilizing a model trained on millions of real-world samples, it monitors for malicious file modification and adapts to novel ransomware using threat intelligence from VirusTotal.

By pausing sync, the system prevents the ransomware from spreading widely across the user's Google Drive. Users then receive an alert and can quickly restore multiple affected files to a previous, healthy state.

How much is it?

The AI-powered ransomware detection and intervention is rolling out starting today in an open beta. It is included in most Google Workspace commercial plans at no extra charge complete with the file restoration function.
