Google Earth has introduced its Flight Simulator mode to the web, allowing users worldwide, including those in Malaysia, to explore the planet from above directly in their browser at no cost. Previously available only as a hidden feature in the desktop version of Google Earth, the tool can now be accessed without downloading or installing any software.

Google brings a classic feature to more users

For your information, the Flight Simulator feature has been part of Google Earth since 2007, but it was largely hidden within the desktop application. Now, Google has made it available through the web version of the platform, making it much easier for users to try it out.

Wait... why is everything upside down?

To access the feature, users need to open Google Earth on a computer, select "Explore Earth," open the Tools menu, and choose "Flight Simulator." The experience works directly in supported web browsers and does not require any additional downloads.

Additionally, Google says the simulator is designed for casual exploration rather than professional flight training. Users can fly over cities, landmarks, mountains, and other locations using Google Earth's satellite imagery and 3D mapping data.

A lightweight alternative for virtual exploration

Unlike dedicated flight simulation titles such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Google's version focuses on accessibility and ease of use. It runs entirely in a browser and can be controlled using a keyboard, mouse, or touch input.

Besides that, the simulator includes basic flight controls, allowing users to steer, adjust speed, and explore different parts of the world from the air. If the aircraft crashes, the simulation pauses and offers an option to reset and continue flying.

Moreover, Google recommends switching from the standard map view to Satellite mode for a more immersive and realistic experience.

More desktop features are reaching the web

Yeah, we are definitely not made for this

According to Google, the Flight Simulator is part of a broader effort to bring more advanced desktop capabilities to the web version of Google Earth. Recent additions include elevation profiles and new import options, with the flight experience being one of the most requested features by users.

Personally, we feel this feature still needs a lot of polishing. The controls are still buggy, and you might need a joystick to fully enjoy it. Plus, the imagery also looks a bit wonky and inaccurate at times. Regardless, while it is not intended to compete with full-fledged simulation software, it offers a fun way to explore Google Earth's mapping and imagery database casually. Especially when it comes to the terrains and environment in Malaysia.

If you have always wanted to see the world from a pilot's perspective, would you give Google Earth's new browser-based Flight Simulator a try? The feature is available globally now and can be accessed directly through Google Earth on the web. What are your thoughts on this feature? Feel free to leave your comments below.
