The world’s most popular web mapping platform, Google Maps, has announced that it will be displaying the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as the ‘Gulf of America’ in the US following President Donald Trump’s Executive Order to rename the geographical area. Google Maps elaborated that the name change on the platform would take place after the US Geographic Names System has been officially updated.

Reuters reported that the name change would be visible in the US, but in Mexico, the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ name would remain. For users outside of both countries, they will see both names on Google Maps.

Displaying two different names for the same place is not something new on the platform though, as Google has applied the same locale-based labelling conventions to other locations subject to naming disputes. For example, outside of Japan and South Korea, the body of water bordering both nations is listed as the "Sea of Japan (East Sea)."
