Google Meet has expanded its noise cancellation feature, making it available by default to a wider range of users, including those on supported Android smartphones.

The update introduces background noise filtering for both Workspace and personal accounts, helping users experience clearer communication without additional cost.

Clearer meetings with Noise Filtering

The noise cancellation feature is designed to reduce distracting sounds such as typing, door slams, echoes, or construction noise during video calls.

It intelligently filters out non-speech audio while preserving voices and relevant media, ensuring natural conversations remain intact.

This feature is now turned on by default in Google Meet for eligible devices. Users can manually disable it if needed—especially in cases where specific background audio is required, such as music sharing or accessibility use. The system also avoids altering shared audio during screen sharing.

Google advises disabling noise cancellation for users relying on electrolarynx devices, as the technology may interfere with assistive audio output.

Supported Android devices

The noise cancellation feature is now supported on a variety of Android smartphones, even without a Google Workspace subscription. These include:

  • Google Pixel: Pixel 4 and newer
  • Samsung: Galaxy S10 and newer, Galaxy A02 and above
  • Xiaomi: Redmi 8 and newer, Redmi Note 5 and above
  • OnePlus: Nord (AC2001) and newer models
  • Realme: Realme 5 Pro, Realme 6 and above
  • Vivo: Vivo Y15 and newer devices

What we could expect

Google Meet automatically determines whether to use device-side or cloud-based noise cancellation based on the device’s capabilities to ensure optimal performance.

For Malaysian users and remote workers everywhere, Google Meet’s automatic noise cancellation is a practical upgrade. It removes distractions from everyday environments without needing additional microphones or settings adjustments.

With growing demand for seamless video conferencing tools, this free feature adds value for both casual users and professionals. Importantly, many mid-range Android smartphones already support it—making it more accessible across different budgets.
