Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that Google Search recently recorded its highest-ever traffic during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Final between France and Argentina. The final, held on Sunday (18 December 2022), was one of the most entertaining finals in World Cup history and Google was effectively the information hub for many people around the world for the match and the World Cup finals as a whole.

Taking to Twitter, Pichai said that Google Search saw its highest-ever traffic throughout its 25-year history during the match, as if “the entire world was searching about one thing”. Google Search became one of the most convenient and comprehensive ways to get information for the 2022 World Cup thanks to updated features released prior to the event starting.

By searching “World Cup” on Google Search, you can see a dedicated section at the top with a list of upcoming matches, along with their dates and local times for the users. Furthermore, users can also set up notifications on mobile for specific teams with a new bell icon and choose the squad that they wish to follow.

The nail-biting final went all the way to a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 3-3 after extra time. Argentina went on to win the shootout and claimed their 3rd World Cup and cementing the team captain Lionel Messi as arguably the greatest football player of all time.
