If your phone is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread – you may want to either find a way to update it or replace it pretty soon as Google has announced that their support for smartphones running Gingerbread would end by early 2017.

As at press time, the percentage of devices running Android 2.3 stands at 1.3% our of the total user base globally. While this may be small, the total userbase of Android is estimated around 1.4 billion devices around the world, so even at 1.3 %, it is about 1.8 million devices in the wild are still running one of the earliest versions of Android.

Google notes that many major Android apps already don’t support Gingerbread and added that ditching support for this version of the OS in a few months will allow it to “provide a more robust collection of tools for Android developers with greater speed.”

We may see older versions of Android not supported soon – will this effect the userbase as a whole? Stay tuned to TechNave for more Android news.
