Meta, X (previously Twitter) and Google have yet to obtain application service provider (ASP) class licences for their social media platforms, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. So, what should you know about it?
The communications minister said the three companies each had concerns or issues that needed to be resolved first. Fahmi said Meta wanted to meet the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission before finalising its application.
“X has argued that it doesn't have enough Malaysian users to need a social media licence.
“We have decided to give it some leeway for now, but the Ministry will set an undisclosed final deadline for all platforms to obtain their ASP soon.
“Regardless of the issue or concern, this must come to an end,” Fahmi told a press conference at the ministry's office on Wednesday.
We have yet to confirm other details on the news. Hopefully, everything will be sorted out soon. It will be interesting to see how the giants in the social media industry will respond to the news.
