Google adding heart-rate reading to its Pixel cameras

It's always interesting to see phones do things you don't expect them to. For example, smartphones can gain new features via software updates. The unexpected update this time is Google and its Pixel smartphones, which can now sense a user's heart rate.

Google has announced that it will be updating the camera for Pixel smartphones to measure a user's heart rate and respiratory rate. This feature will be available through the Google Fit starting next month. Furthermore, the feature will be expanded to other Android devices in the future.

To elaborate, the feature works by using the Pixel's front camera. The user must first position their head and upper torso in front of the camera, then place their finger on the rear camera and breathe regularly. You can then save the measurements to Google Fit and use the app to track your health info.

This kind of measuring probably won't be as accurate as of the biometric sensors on a fitness band, but Google claims that it should be enough for basic readings. What do you think, would you just use this instead of buying a fitness wearable? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
