Generative AI is utilised in various aspects today. We use these platforms to help summarise and discover solutions to our problems and perform other tasks. For instance, NotebookLM helps with research and studying. The latest update adds new features to help students study better.

6 new features

Yesterday, Google unveiled 6 new features for NotebookLM. These features are designed to help users "transform passive reading into active learning". Below is an overview of the new features.

  • Generate flashcards and quizzes using information from uploaded documents
  • Reports now include a blog post format and can dynamically suggest themes, topics, or industries
  • Learning Guide to act as your AI tutor
  • Curated notebooks from trusted academia
  • Audio Overview to help you understand topics in audio form
  • Expanded notebook creation and access for educators

Making learning easier

As you can tell, these features benefit students more than researchers (not to say it won't). If you find your textbooks too wordy and convoluted, the latest version of NotebookLM could be of help to you. But are platforms like NotebookLM handy learning tools, or do they take away our agency or ability to self-study? Can we trust AI to hallucinate when making these study aids? These are important things to consider.
