For some people, the alternative to laptops is the tablet. But what if you want to work on a mobile app and the tablet's screen is still not big enough? In that case, mirroring your phone to a larger display could be the solution. Samsung DeX works like this, but a more universal option is allegedly being developed.
According to Android Authority, Google is working on an alternate version of Samsung DeX for Android devices. In the latest Android 16 beta version, users can now mirror an Android device's screen to an external display. The feature can be enabled in Developer options by toggling "Enable desktop experience features".

As the name suggests, this feature allows users to view and operate the apps on their phone through another device. In the example, a Google Pixel 8 Pro was connected to a laptop and given access to the screen, keyboard, and touchpad. Users can also resize and move the app windows around. This makes it easy to run multiple apps on one screen for multitasking.
While Android apps don't have the performance and versatility of desktop programs on a Windows PC (yet), some people may want the option to use their phone as a desktop alternative.
