While Google Stadia has never stepped foot in Malaysia, it's still quite shocking to hear the news from Google that the streaming gaming platform will be shutting down. Only after going live in 2019, the company decided to axe the project due to the lack of traction with users.
With this decision, Google will refund all the Stadia hardware purchases that were made through the Google Store. This also includes all game and add-on content purchases from the Stadia Store. Every refund is likely to complete by mid-January of 2023, and the Stadia servers will cease by 18 January 2023.
For those who don't know, Google Stadia's concept allows gamers to play video games through the online cloud. This means that even without a particular gaming console at hand, you would still be able to play a video game on your phone, PC, laptop or TV via Stadia servers. On paper, it is a wonderful idea but this also means a high amount of internet speed is required. Stadia is also not available in many countries such as Malaysia.
Google said that Stadia could be applied on other platforms such as YouTube, Google Play, and Augmented Reality (AR), as well as to industry partners for the future of gaming.
