Google has announced the rollout of Gemini for Education across all public universities in Malaysia, covering all 20 Malaysian public universities, reaching nearly 600000 students and about 75000 faculty members. The rollout integrates Gemini directly within existing Google Workspace for Education environments used by universities, allowing students and educators to access AI-powered tools for learning, research and administrative tasks.
The Gemini for Education Initiative
With the rollout, universities gain access to advanced AI features powered by Gemini 3.1 Pro, one of Google’s latest reasoning models. The system is combined with LearnLM, a family of AI models designed specifically for educational use cases. Students and lecturers can take advantage of tools such as Guided Learning, which acts as an interactive study partner that helps users better understand concepts rather than simply providing quick answers.
Another feature, Deep Research, functions as a research assistant that can gather and analyze information across multiple sources. These capabilities aim to help students with studying, writing assignments and conducting academic research while giving lecturers new ways to personalize teaching materials.
Government Support Expands Access To Premium AI Tools
The initiative is being supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, which is also providing expanded AI access and training for universities. Around 40000 faculty members are receiving Google AI Pro for Education, while approximately 128000 students are being equipped with NotebookLM Enterprise to assist with research and
Beyond deploying tools, Google is also introducing a range of training initiatives to strengthen AI literacy among Malaysian students. Programs such as Gemilang Google Skills Initiative, free Google AI courses, Gemini certification programs for university students and Google Career Launchpad are designed to help learners develop practical digital skills.
Universities Begin Integrating Gemini Into Learning Environments
Several universities have already begun experimenting with customized uses of Gemini. For example, Universiti Malaysia Perlis is exploring personalized AI tools known as “Gems,” which allow lecturers to build specialized AI assistants tailored to specific courses without requiring coding knowledge. In one example, a lecturer created a custom AI study partner for students in integrated circuit design and microelectromechanical systems courses, providing on-demand explanations and support.
A Step Toward AI-driven Education in Malaysia
With Gemini now deployed across every public university in the country, Malaysia becomes one of the first nations in Southeast Asia to introduce AI tools at this scale within its higher education system. The move highlights how governments and technology companies are increasingly collaborating to integrate generative AI into classrooms and research environments.
