Some smartphones launched in 2021 were expected to sport an under-display camera but didn't deliver. One of them was the Google Pixel 6 lineup, which ended up sticking with punch-hole cutout instead. However, it might be a different story for the Pixel 7 coming out this year, as it could finally pack the technology.

A new patent that Google published with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) reveals that the company is working on an under-display camera for the next-generation flagship. Titled "Display configuration for mobile computing devices", the patent shows us how Google's version of the under-display camera would work.

The patent highlights the need to increase display size without increasing phone dimensions. It involves a sub-display and a prism, with an emissive display and a small non-emissive part where the camera can look through it. The front-facing cameras and the light sensor will be placed under the mentioned display alongside other sensors.

Compared to the previous patent, the source mentions that this one has a more cost-effective solution. Therefore, could we finally get Pixel phones with an under-display camera this year? Stay tuned to TechNave.com for the latest smartphone report.
