Google recently weighed in on our current Work From Home or WFH situation and productivity (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) with Laura Mae Martin, Executive Productivity Advisor, Google. For many just starting to work from home, the lines between work and home life are blurring, which may lead to WFH burnout.

According to her, the biggest mistake is that most people think that WFH means working all the time, that this WFH situation is just for a short while and trying to endure it. Rather, we should think about how we could be happy and successful if this WFH situation was permanent and work on setting boundaries and try not to work too much.

You can check out her detailed tips on Google’s Blog but here are some tips on How to avoid WFH Burnout:

  • Setting boundaries - Set where you work and set where you don’t let work intrude
  • Write down or plan your daily goals then mark them off so you can keep track of your productivity
  • Try to take things positively and take advantage of the time

In related news she also had some other WFH tips as well:

  • How to get out of slumps - break it down to the smallest task you can do like renaming a file in Google Docs or something like that. This makes doing that task a lot easier which leads to more steps being done and eventually out of your slump.
  • How to do better virtual meetings - Interact with people. Rehearse if necessary and prepare for the meeting. stay fully engaged. Schedule less time than you think you actually need.

While Laura noted that she’s shifted more to her laptop (since she isn’t as mobile now) she does say that it’s entirely up to you. Personally, I’ve used my smartphone in a hub dock linked up to my monitor but that’s just me.
