Google patent shows possible design for foldable Pixel device

Foldable devices are premium but very niche devices. However, we will probably be seeing more of them in 2021. Surprisingly, it was rumoured that Google would be one of the companies launching one this year and we now have some clues about the design.

According to WindowsUnited.de, Google filed two patents for a foldable smartphone to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) last year. The designs were recently published, revealing a possible design for Google's foldable Pixel. One details a regular foldable hinge, while the other mentions a sliding mechanism.

From what we can tell, these are two different implementations for a foldable device. Where the first device would fold inwards like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, the second one would fold outwards like the Huawei Mate Xs instead. It also seems the sliding mechanism is for the ridge-like hinge to bend without stretching the screen.

Mind you, it's unknown which of the two patents would be the final design for Google's foldable Pixel. For all we know, it could be neither of them. Having said that, which foldable design do you prefer? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
