Last weekend, Google released the latest update on its privacy policy. At first glance, you might have overlooked or missed it. This is understandable as the changes made to the privacy policy were almost minuscule, but has a pretty significant impact.

So you might ask "What did I miss?". Well, the changes to its privacy policy are in its very specific choice of words. Especially in the research and development section, which precisely states that

"Google uses information to improve our services and to develop new products, features and technologies that benefit our users and the public. For example, we use publicly available information to help train Google’s AI models and build products and features like Google Translate, Bard, and Cloud AI capabilities."

Previously, the section mentioned “language model” instead of “AI model”. Plus, the update mentioned Google Translate, which includes Bard and Cloud AI. Based on the Gizmodo report, this change in wording was made so these Tech Giants could reserve rights over data made available on the public internet. Previously, this policy was only applicable for the use of data posted on its service.

This presents a new dilemma because the data made available for public viewing are now viable for exploitation by anyone, and everyone. AI models that provide real-time information by scraping data from the internet, are now accused of being AI tools for theft. Some of these AI tools include ChatGPT, Bard and Bing Chat. There are several lawsuits on this matter and it is not farfetched to assume that there will be more in the future.
