Google tests “Ask YouTube” AI chatbot search experience

Google is experimenting with a new AI-powered search experience on YouTube, introducing a chatbot-style feature called “Ask YouTube.” The tool is designed to make searching for videos feel more like a conversation rather than a traditional keyword-based query. Currently, the feature is being rolled out as a limited experiment, available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are aged 18 and above.

A More Conversational Way to Search Videos

With “Ask YouTube,” users can type natural language questions instead of short search terms. The system then generates a response that combines AI-written summaries with relevant video results. For example, asking about a topic like a historical event will return a short explanation, followed by curated video clips, themed video collections, and even Shorts, all organised into categories.

The experience is designed to feel closer to interacting with an AI assistant, where users can continue asking follow-up questions to refine their search results. Instead of simply listing videos, “Ask YouTube” surfaces contextual information alongside content, helping users quickly understand a topic before diving into videos. Results may include timestamped clips, grouped playlists, and suggested follow-up queries, creating a more guided discovery experience compared to traditional scrolling through search results.

Still Experimental With Accuracy Concerns

As with many generative AI features, accuracy remains a concern. Early testing has shown that the chatbot can occasionally produce misleading or incorrect information, highlighting the need for users to verify details from reliable sources. This reflects ongoing challenges across AI-powered search tools, where convenience and speed sometimes come at the cost of precision.

The introduction of “Ask YouTube” aligns with Google’s wider effort to integrate AI across its ecosystem, transforming how users interact with search, content, and information. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
