We have good news for IPTA students planning to “balik kampung”. From 15 August onwards, the government will introduce a flight ticket subsidy worth RM300 for public university students. This subsidy is applicable for domestic routes in all of Malaysia.

According to Malaysian Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, this would be implemented through a credit shell. Participating airlines will issue digital vouchers worth RM300 for eligible students through this system. Loke also said that the subsidy is only valid for the purchase of one-way and return economy class flight tickets between the student’s place of origin and place of study.

According to Loke, this initiative costs around RM16.8 million and would benefit over 56000 IPTA students nationwide. If the ticket cost is lower than RM300, the balance can be used for the next flight ticket. The digital voucher can only be used for Malaysia Airlines, Airasia, Batik Air, Firefly and MYAirline tickets.

Students can check their eligibility and apply for the voucher through the Transport Ministry’s website. Ineligible students can appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education through their varsities. They can also apply for the subsidy on selected airlines' websites. Students should also remember that the deadline to redeem the flight ticket voucher is 31 October 2023.
