On 11 August 2025, Elon Musk announced that Grok 4, developed by his company xAI, is now available for free to all users. However, the free tier includes a limited number of queries per day, while full access still requires a subscription.
What happened
Grok 4 is integrated into X (formerly Twitter), the standalone Grok app, and Tesla vehicles. The move comes shortly after the release of OpenAI’s GPT-5, signalling stronger competition in the AI market.
Under the free plan, users can access Grok 4 through Auto mode—where the AI automatically determines the best way to respond—or Expert mode, which allows for direct interaction. The more advanced Heavy mode remains exclusive to paying subscribers under the SuperGrok Heavy plan.
Reports suggest that the free-tier usage is currently more generous than expected, likely to encourage adoption before xAI fine-tunes the limits to drive more subscriptions.
What we could expect
This feels like a calculated move from xAI. By giving everyone a taste of Grok 4’s capabilities, the company can hook new users who might later consider upgrading for full access.
For tech users in Malaysia, it is an opportunity to test whether Grok 4’s Auto or Expert modes can become part of their daily digital workflow.
Now could be the best time to try Grok 4 while the free tier is still open. Will you find Auto mode convenient enough, or will Expert mode impress you more? Stay tuned to TechNave.com for more updates.
