Apple has long been rumoured to be developing its own AR/VR headset and it looks like the product’s release is getting closer as Apple has already gotten a name for the operating system (OS) running on the device. According to reliable tipster Mark Gurman, Apple has decided to call the software xrOS, instead of the previously rumoured RealityOS.

Writing on Bloomberg, Gurman said that xrOS will be the dedicated OS for Apple’s mixed-reality headset, though no official launch date has been mentioned just yet. However, based on the latest rumours, the device is set for release sometime in 2023.

The headset itself will be similar to Microsoft HoloLens, meaning that it will be capable of both AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality). xrOS itself is an abbreviation of extended reality operating system, thus alluding to the device supporting both AR and VR.

According to Gurman, this upcoming device will be Apple’s first foray into a new product category since the introduction of the Apple Watch in 2015. Of course, do take this information with a grain of salt as nothing has been confirmed by Apple as of yet.
