Here are the highlights of Budget 2022 in technology

Today, the Malaysian government held a Budget 2022 conference. Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz was the one giving the presentation and the budget this year seems to focus on Malaysian families. 

In this news article, we will be focusing on technology-related matters and there are a couple of them mentioned in the Parliament. Before we get into that, a total allocation of RM332.1 billion was announced and it's Malaysia's largest allocation ever. The COVID-19 fund which is RM23 billion is part of the allocation.

Without further ado, here are some of the technology-related highlights from the Budget 2022:

  • RM150 eWallet credit will be provided to youths aged between 18-20 years old, this includes students in institutions of higher learning
  • Approximately 600,000 students from B40 families studying in institutions of higher learning will get a free tablet
  • RM2500 tax relief for the purchase of smartphones, computers and tablets
  • RM20 million allocated to push Malaysia eSports industry, including RM5 million to develop centres for drone sports
  • Road Tax exemptions up to 100% given to electronic vehicle (EV) owners, tax relief of up to RM2500 given for purchase, assembly, renting and leasing of EVs
  • A total of RM250 million is allocated for Shop Malaysia Online and Go-eCommerce Onboarding
