2021 will be ending soon and there are many things that have happened. One of the best ways to refresh our memory is none other than Twitter (sorry, no more YouTube Rewind) and for this year, we will be taking a good look at #OnlyOnTwitter Malaysia 2021.
According to the Twitter database from 1 January until 15 November 2021, most of the tweets in Malaysia were about discovering and reconnecting with communities. This includes sharing new takes on local delicacies, a heartfelt message on spending time with your loved ones, excitement over childhood favourites, coming together to support a disabled man's business, or just cracking some jokes. Despite the challenges this year, there is surprising more good than controversial wildfire content on Twitter for Malaysians.
As for the most hashtags that sparked the most conversations in Malaysia, #Ateez (a K-Pop band rising to popularity) surprisingly made the top 10 spots alongside #BTS that is now known as the Best K-Pop Group in The World. #BitCoin is also another popular topic amongst Malaysian with the rise of investing in cryptocurrency and of course, #Covid19 is still around this year.
Let's not also forget about sports in Malaysia, when track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang (@azizulawang) made the country proud by winning Malaysia’s first-ever silver medal for the men's keirin at the biggest 2021 sporting event in Tokyo. Then there's also the 2021 All England Open title where Lee Zii Jia became Malaysia’s first champion since 2017. On that note, Team Malaysia (@teammsia) became the go-to place for Malaysians to cheer on their local heroes.
