Apple has just released a new firmware for its popular line of wearable wireless audio devices which includes the AirPods 2, AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max. Currently at firmware version 4E71, it is replacing the previous version of 4C165.

So, what does the update bring? Well, no one but Apple knows because the company didn’t actually release any notes with the firmware updates of the AirPods lineup. Furthermore, the original AirPods won't be receiving this new firmware update.

Moving forward, since the UI change in iOS 14, in order to access the AirPods settings, you have to navigate under Bluetooth instead of Apple ID's devices list option. Hence, you have to dig quite deep to see what firmware your AirPods are actually on. Moreover, you don’t actually have a way to force an update onto your AirPods since it's all automated.

So, how to know your AirPods’ firmware and to start the update? Just follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Navigate to the ‘Bluetooth’ menu, which should be the third option from the top.
  • Find your AirPods on the list, make sure it’s connected and press on the ‘i’ next to the listing.

In the menu, you can customise the name of your AirPods (if you haven’t already), do an Ear Tip Fit Test, switch between the noise control settings and others. More importantly, you can check your current firmware version by going to the very bottom under the ‘Version’ tab.

If it’s still not updated to version 4E71, all you have to do is make sure your AirPods stay connected to your Apple devices. The update will be automatically install in the background, though there’s no way to tell when it will start or when it will finish.

Nevertheless, by my experience, a quick usage of the AirPods will automatically install the upgrade in the background. Just recheck the firmware version after a few hours of use and it should be updated to the latest version.
