Hilton Malaysia uses AI to prevent food waste during Ramadan

During Ramadan, Hilton Malaysia is expanding its Green Ramadan initiative by using AI technology to reduce food waste at Hilton Kuala Lumpur, Hilton Petaling Jaya, DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut Resort, and DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside.

Winnow AI technology is used to track food waste in real-time, allowing hotel kitchens to analyze food waste patterns and make more precise adjustments. This system assesses waste before food reaches customers (such as over-preparation) as well as waste after it is served (such as leftovers on plates). With this AI report, menus and serving sizes can be optimised to reduce food waste and reduce carbon footprint.

In addition, these hotels also implement additional measures such as carbon footprint labels on food, live cooking stations and the reuse of kitchen waste such as vegetable peels to be used as seasoning or natural fertiliser. Hilton's Green Ramadan initiative, introduced in 2023, has shown positive results with a 61% reduction in food waste in 30 days.

In 2024, the program expanded to 32 hotels in seven countries and successfully reduced food waste by another 21% compared to the previous year. The use of AI in this initiative demonstrates how technology can help the hospitality industry become more sustainable, in line with Hilton's Travel With Purpose 2030 goals.
