The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged Malaysians who have renewed their passports online to collect the document immediately after it is ready. This is because any passports uncollected by applicants within 90 days will be disposed of by the Immigration Department.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin asserted that it is not the jurisdiction of the Immigration Department to send the passports to the applicants. Furthermore, under the regulations that have been stipulated under the authority of the Department, they have the power to dispose of passports that have not been collected after 90 days.

In fact, the Immigration Department had recently revealed that a total of 2600 passports renewed online have yet to be claimed by their applicants. This follows the announcement made by the Department that most passport renewals by Malaysians can only be done online through MyOnline Passport beginning 11 May 2022.

Furthermore, in a statement on 15 May 2022, only the below categories are allowed to walk-in for renewal of passport at the Immigration Department:

  • Senior citizens (over 60 years old)
  • Person with disabilities
  • Children (below 13 years old)
  • Individuals going for Haj pilgrimage
  • Individuals under 21 years old that are studying degree overseas
  • Individuals that have lost/damaged their passports
