If you've ever typed something in a search bar and felt the frustration of not getting anything close to what you described, then you'll understand the importance of such functions. They can easily make or break any sort of e-commerce platform.
The digital frustrations of a faulty search bar, the logistical headaches of maintaining consistent service across a vast hotel network, and the operational inefficiencies of traditional workflows are all too familiar. As customer expectations are on the rise in Malaysia, these issues can be a silent killer of sales and a major blow to brand reputation.
However, a glimpse into an AI-powered future is already underway just across the causeway. In Singapore, Gill Capital Group (powering brands like H&M in Indonesia and Thailand), Frasers Hospitality, and FairPrice Group are leveraging Google Cloud agentic solutions to tackle these very challenges head-on. These could provide a blueprint for how Malaysian counterparts in similar industries could also utilise such features.
Smarter Online Shopping for E-commerce?

For online retailers, a clunky search function is often the first and final barrier to a sale. Shoppers with specific needs are met with irrelevant results or, worse, a dead end that reads “no results found.” Gill Capital recognised this and, through Google Cloud's AI Cloud Takeoff (AI CTO) program, implemented a solution for H&M's platforms: Vertex AI Search for Commerce.
More than just keyword-matching search, Vertex AI Search for Commerce understands the intent behind natural language queries, even in local languages and with common typos. Imagine a Malaysian shopper typing "baju raya terkini untuk lelaki" (latest Raya clothes for men) or "kasut sukan selesa untuk larian jarak jauh" (comfortable sports shoes for long-distance running). This AI can decipher the meaning, not just the words, for more relevant results.

Beyond that, a conversational AI agent built on the same platform acts as a virtual shopping assistant. This agent provides personalised recommendations, answers questions about product availability in physical stores (linking the online and offline worlds), and even clarifies return policies.
For Malaysian e-commerce players, including fashion marketplaces to electronics retailers, implementing such a solution could be a game-changer. It could easily boost conversion rates and customer satisfaction by making the online shopping experience feel intuitive and personalised for Malaysian consumers.
The Next Retail Transformation?

The FairPrice Group recently launched their FairPrice Finest in the Punggol Digital District
After Gill Capital, Singapore's largest retailer, FairPrice Group (FPG), is now pioneering the use of agentic AI to redefine the entire retail experience for both customers and employees. This expanded collaboration with Google Cloud could serve as a more comprehensive blueprint for Malaysian retail businesses.
At its "Store of Tomorrow" and the aforementioned FairPrice Finest, FPG has integrated a multimodal shopping assistant into its Smart Carts. This is a powerful system where multiple AI agents work together to provide in-depth assistance. For example, a customer can ask for "yam paste," and the AI can not only find the right ingredients but also suggest complementary items, recipes, and pairings.

The system, driven by Vertex AI Search and the Gemini API, can even understand local dialects and terms like "orh nee" (yam paste in a local dialect) or "chye poh" (preserved radish). This level of personalised, conversational guidance goes far beyond a typical search bar, offering a glimpse into the future of intuitive in-store shopping.
FPG's AI transformation isn't just for customers; it's also a core part of its strategy to empower employees. The company is adopting Google Agentspace, a unified platform for building and managing AI agents, giving its workforce access to sophisticated tools. A notable example is a custom creative agent that automates the creation of promotional ads for in-store campaigns.
This agent uses Google Cloud's Imagen 4 and Veo 3 models to generate high-quality videos and visuals from text prompts, reducing the time and cost of creating these ads by up to 100 times. For Malaysian businesses, where marketing and operational efficiency are key, this application could be very useful.

Streamlining Service and Ensuring Consistency in Hospitality?

In the hotel industry, maintaining a high standard of service across a diverse workforce and multiple locations can be daunting. Every time a new appliance is installed or a procedure is updated, manuals and training programs need to be revised and disseminated, which can be a time-consuming process. Frasers Hospitality addressed this by developing an AI agent-based app.
Using Google Cloud's Vertex AI and the Gemini API, this app automatically analyses training videos to generate standardised operating procedures (SOPs) and flowcharts. It then makes them available to staff via a knowledge base, complete with a built-in translation feature.

This ensures that all staff, regardless of their native language or location, have access to the same, up-to-date information. It dramatically reduces the time and effort required for training, leading to more consistent service delivery and hopefully a better guest experience.
For Malaysian hotels and serviced apartment chains with properties across the country, this technology could be a huge advantage. It would allow for quicker onboarding of new staff and ensure that a hotel in Penang operates with the same high standards as one in Kuala Lumpur, without a key person in charge having to monitor 24/7.
When asked "Why Google Gemini?", Ian Loe, Managing Director, Group Digital and Technology, Frasers Property highlighted the very affordable costs of about $100 a month, its interoperability via Vertex AI and fast development time. According to them, they were able use just the Gemini models out the box and go from design to prototype in just 6 weeks. Thanks to this interoperability, Fraser's Hospitality properties in China for example can easily work with DeepSeek and have no issues.
An AI-Powered Future for Malaysia?

Francis deSouza, Chief Operating Officer, Google Cloud believes that Agentic AI will reshape every industry
While these projects took place in Singapore, they could easily serve as examples of what's possible for Malaysian businesses. The core technologies, like Vertex AI Search for intelligent discovery and knowledge management, the versatile Gemini API for content generation across formats (e.g text, image, video), and the Agent Development Kit for an easier way to build agentic AI applications, could be tailored to the unique needs of the Malaysian market.
As Malaysian organisations seek to enhance their customer experience and gain a competitive edge, embracing these AI-powered services from Google Cloud could be a critical step toward a more efficient, customer-centric, and technologically advanced future.
These examples from Singapore are not just interesting case studies; they could be drafts for Malaysia's own AI-driven transformation. What do you think? Could you foresee your business implementing such Google Cloud AI solutions? Would it actually improve efficiency and reduce costs, or is it just a Singapore thing?
