Do all smartphones need 2K display?

If you remember your history lesson last year, Huawei CEO Richard Yu commented that there's no need for smartphones to use 2K displays as regular customers won't be able to tell apart between a 1080p panel and a 2K panel. However, that didn't seem to be the case anymore as just recently through his Weibo account, he revealed the honor series will adapt the 2K displays for VR purpose.

In his account, although he now supports high resolution for VR technology, he still doesn't think all smartphones need it as people cannot differentiate the quality, and doesn't want to use it as a gimmick for Huawei products for it doesn't add real value in terms of display experience. Lastly, more power will be consumed as well which makes sense, and it's not good for the battery life.

To add on to that, will the upcoming honor V8 feature 2K display then? It's hard to say, since there is barely any information. But what we do know now that is Mr. Yu intends to keep the honor and P9 models separated as their own identity, one for VR and the other for camera respectively. He also remarked that Huawei has already perfected the 2K display technology, by explaining the Kirin 950 chipset and GPU are powerful enough to handle it.

Are you looking forward to the honor V8 device that is coming soon on 10 May? Also, we will be covering the P9 flagship in Bali, Indonesia on 5 May soon, so stay tuned for its price and availability for Malaysia at Technave.com!
